Care & Maintenance

Cleaning Your Blinds, Shades & Shutters

Proper care and routine cleaning will help preserve the appearance and performance of your window fashions for years to come. Shade & Light Window Fashions products are designed for durability, but regular maintenance is recommended to prevent dust buildup and staining.

Routine Dusting (Recommended Weekly or Bi-Weekly)

Dust slats and surfaces using a soft, clean cloth or a chemically treated dust cloth.

  • Tilt the slats upward and gently dust.
  • Then tilt the slats downward (not fully closed) and dust the opposite side.
  • This method ensures both sides of each slat are properly cleaned.

Vacuum Cleaning (Monthly or as Needed)

Vacuuming is an effective way to remove accumulated dust and debris.

  • Use a brush or dust-head attachment only.
  • Tilt the slats upward and downward as described in the dusting method while vacuuming.
  • Avoid using high suction or rigid attachments that could damage slats or fabric.

Spot Cleaning & Light Washing

For deeper cleaning:

  • Use a damp cloth with a mild detergent solution.
  • Clean gently using warm or cold water only (do not use hot water).
  • Tilt the slats up and down while wiping to clean both sides evenly.
  • Rinse with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue.
  • Allow slats to air dry completely before fully closing or raising the blind.

Bathtub Cleaning (For Thorough Cleaning)

For more extensive cleaning of aluminum or vinyl blinds:

  • Remove the blind from the window.
  • Do not immerse the headrail or internal mechanisms.
  • Submerge only the slats and bottom rail in a bathtub filled with mild, soapy water.
  • Gently agitate to loosen dirt and grime.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  • Wipe dry with a soft cloth or allow to air dry completely before reinstalling.

Important Care Tips

  • Never use abrasive cleaners, scrub pads, or harsh chemicals.
  • Do not use steam cleaners or pressure washers.
  • Avoid excessive moisture on wood or fabric products.
  • Always support slats and rails during cleaning to prevent bending.
  • Ensure blinds are completely dry before raising or closing them fully.

Fabric Shades & Specialty Products

Fabric shades, motorized systems, and specialty materials may require specific cleaning methods. If you are unsure how to clean your product, we recommend contacting Shade & Light Window Fashions for guidance before attempting deep cleaning.
