How to Measure Your Windows

Before You Begin

For best results, measure each window individually, as window sizes can vary even within the same room.

Always measure width first, then height, and record measurements to the nearest 1/8 inch.

Use a metal tape measure only. Cloth or flexible tape measures are not accurate for window measurements.

Inside Mount (IB)

Inside mount blinds are installed inside the window frame.

Width: Record the narrowest measurement.

  • Top
  • Middle
  • Bottom

Height: Measure the inside height in three places. Measure from the top of the opening to the top of the sill. For horizontal blinds, record the longest measurement.

  • Left
  • Center
  • Right

Do not make any deductions.
The factory will make a standard ½-inch allowance for proper operating clearance.

To check if your window is square, measure diagonally from corner to corner in two directions. If the two diagonal measurements are not the same, an outside mount is recommended for the best fit and appearance.

Outside Mount (OB)

Outside mount blinds are installed outside the window frame, covering an area larger than the window opening.

Width:

  • Measure the total width of the area to be covered.
  • Be sure to overlap the window opening by at least 1½ inches on each side to ensure proper privacy and light control.

Height: Measure the total height to be covered, including the desired overlap.

  • From the top of the molding to the bottom edge, or
  • To the top of the sill

If there is no sill, measure to where you want the blind to end.

No deductions are made on outside mount measurements.
